RSS (most commonly expanded as Really Simple Syndication) is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format. An RSS document (which is called a "feed", "web feed", or "channel") includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship. Web feeds benefit publishers by letting them syndicate content automatically. They benefit readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from favored websites or to aggregate feeds from many sites into one place. RSS feeds can be read using software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader", or "aggregator", which can be web-based, desktop-based, or mobile-device-based. A standardized XML file format allows the information to be published once and viewed by many different programs. The user subscribes to a feed by entering into the reader the feed's URI or by clicking an RSS icon in a web browser that initiates the subscription process. The RSS reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new work, downloads any updates that it finds, and provides a user interface to monitor and read the feeds.

RSS formats are specified using XML, a generic specification for the creation of data formats. Although RSS formats have evolved from as early as March 1999, it was between 2005 and 2006 when RSS gained widespread use, and the ("") icon was decided upon by several major Web browsers.

What is the best way to incorporate my blog RSS feed on my Facebook profile?
Q. Can't seem to find an application that integrates RSS feeds very well. Ideally I'm looking for something that posts the title of my new blog post on my wall feed or in some way indicates on my wall that I've update my blog. The default mechanism Facebook uses to import feeds just adds updates as Notes and pushes them off to the side. Ideas?

A. I might depend on what blogging software you use. I blog on and theres a neat feature that I use which allows me to click a button when viewing my blog post so that it automatically puts that blog post on your facebook wall saying you have written a new article. Also other users can do the same thing with your posts on their wall as well.

Is there a way to exclude certain posts from going into your RSS Feed?
Q. Exactly that. I post individual stories about football teams, but do NOT want those in my RSS feed. I do however create a post every few days as a compilation of all those small stories that I DO want in my feed. How can I modify this?

A. Depending on where you are publishing the information you may be able to accomplish this by tagging the articles. For instance, you may be able to generate an RSS feed excluding articles that are tagged "nonsyndicated" or you might be able to do the opposite and generate an RSS feed for articles tagged "syndicated". These types of things are usually accomplished through some sort of advanced search feature if you are using a public blogging web site. Otherwise you can use a third-party service like which removes specific entries based on filters that you define. This will give you a new RSS feed to distribute. The problem with this approach is that if you publish 10 articles that you want to filter out, but the RSS feeds that you send… [cont.]

If a website has a rss feed is that material still copyrighted since it is being syndicated to other sites?
Q. RSS - really simple syndication. Its syndicated and used on other sites. If an article with authors name is posted(exact) is this a copyright violation when they have a rss feed for the post?

A. That is a great question. The legalities of syndicating RSS feeds are unclear. Here is a great article that delves into the issue:
